HC Deb 15 May 1907 vol 174 cc977-8
MR. ARKWRIGHT (Hereford)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord-Lieutenant of Ireland if he can now state how many police are at present employed in affording protection to the occupiers of grazing farms in the counties of Galway, Mayo, Roscommon, Leitrim, and Westmeath.

MR. BIRRELL

Eighty-one policemen are occupied in affording protection to the occupiers of grazing farms in the counties of Galway, Mayo, and Roscommon. In addition, some 400 police secure the stock on the farms from molestation.

VISCOUNT TURNOUR

Does the right hon. Gentleman consider that the force of police is sufficient to prevent any of these outrages taking place in the future?

MR. BIRRELL

Any request made by the police for further men is always very carefully considered. I am told that the force is sufficient at present.
