HC Deb 26 August 1907 vol 182 cc149-51
MR. SUMMERBELL (Sunderland)

I beg to ask the Under-Secretary for the Colonies if he is aware that in Jamaica there is not a single coloured man in the Legislature or even occupying any position of importance under the Government: and, in view of the fact that much of the discontent that at present exists in the island is due to this fact, whether it is the intention of the Government in the near future to institute legislation having for its object the entrusting of the people of that island with larger powers as to the management of their home affairs.

THE UNDER-SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (Mr. CHURCHILL,) Manchester, N.W.

The hon. Member's Question is based on incorrect information. At the last election for the Legislative Council I understand that several coloured gentlemen were returned. No modification of the constitution of Jamaica is at present contemplated.
