SMITHI beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board whether he can state the number of pauper children emigrated to the Colonies during the last 12 months; and whether the modification of the rules laid down by the Local Government Board in 1887 has perceptibly affected the progress of the movement?
§ *MR. RITCHIEThe number of orphan and deserted children who were sent to Canada by Boards of Guardians during the year ended 31st December, 1890, was 375. In the year preceding the revision of the conditions of emigration, the number of pauper 1054 children sent to Canada was 166. The year 1890 shows an increase of 209 on that number.
