HC Deb 08 May 1890 vol 344 cc472-3
MR. LABOUCHERE

I beg to ask the Attorney General for Ireland what has been the result of the inquiry on the part of the Lord Chancellor into the conduct of Mr. G. Sandes, J.P., for the County of Kerry, and whether he has been superseded in the Commission of the Peace?

MR. MADDEN

The Lord Chancellor of Ireland, having carefully inquired into and considered all the circumstances of the case, came to the conclusion that the repute and usefulness of the gentleman referred to were so affected that in the public interest he ought no longer to be retained in the Magistracy, and the Lord Chancellor has accordingly directed that his name be omitted from the Commission of the Peace.

MR. CLANCY (Dublin Co., N.)

When was the decision arrived at?

MR. MADDEN

Sometime last month.

MR. CLANCY

Yet last week the Chief Secretary said that he knew nothing about it.

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

It was not my business to know anything about it. It rested entirely with the Lord Chancellor, who told me last Saturday the decision he had come to. That, however, was subsequently to the question to which the hon. Member refers.
