SHAW LEFEVREI beg to ask the Secretary of State for War whether he can state the estimated amount which will ho expended within the present financial year under the Second Schedule of "The Imperial Defence Act, 1888," and also the amount which it is estimated will be expended in the coming financial year?

STANHOPEThe expenditure during' the current financial year under the Second Schedule of the Imperial Defence Act, 1888, will have been £360,000 for works and £250,000 for armaments, together £610,000. For 1890–91 the anticipated expenditure on armaments is £450,000; that on works cannot yet be stated. I hope to state the expenditure for works at a somewhat later date.
