HC Deb 03 March 1890 vol 341 c1622
MR. STANLEY LEIGHTON (Shropshire, Oswestry)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether the Government propose to take any steps towards relieving commoners who own land from liability to serve the office of High Sheriff, in accordance with the recommendations of the Select Committee of the House of Lords in 1888?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. MATTHEWS, Birmingham, E.)

Her Majesty's Government are fully alive to the importance of the subject to which my hon. Friend refers in his question, and the matter is now receiving their consideration.
