§ MR. LYELL (Orkney and Shetland)I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade whether the work of erecting lighthouses on Pair Isle has begun; what is the present state of the works; and when it is expected that the buildings will be finished and the lights shown?
§ *THE PRESIDENT OF THE BOARD OF TRADE (Sir M. HICKS BEACH,) Bristol, W.I understand from the Commissioners of Northern Lighthouses that the contractors whose tender was formally accepted on the 23 rd ultimo are now actively engaged in preparing material and arranging for the shipping of it, and expect to commence operations on the island before the end of this month. The erection of the lights will be proceeded with as quickly as possible, having regard to the difficulties of communication with the island.
