HC Deb 08 July 1890 vol 346 c1094
MR. CUNINGHAME GRAHAM (Lanark, N.W.)

I beg to ask the President of the Local Government Board if he will make inquiries as to the death by starvation of a man (unknown), on Friday last, in a common lodging house in High Street, Woolwich; whether he has observed that Dr. James Watson deposed before the Coroner that, in his opinion, the death was due to starvation, and that the Jury found accordingly; and if he has any more information as to the death by starvation of Elizabeth Barrett?

*MR. RITCHIE

I have no information as to the alleged death from starvation; in a common lodging house in High Street, Woolwich, but I will make inquiry with regard to the case. With respect to the case of Elizabeth Barrett, I have not yet received from the Coroner a copy of the depositions. As soon as it is received I will consider whether it is necessary to communicate with the Guardians on the subject. I am not at present in a position to give the House any further information respecting the case.
