HC Deb 08 May 1889 vol 335 c1417
DR. CAMERON (Glasgow, College)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether his attention had been called to the case of Thomas Beresford, who, in 1876, when 13 years of age, was sentenced to two months' imprisonment for an assault, but did not undergo the punishment, in consequence of the magistrate stopping its execution on Beresford giving a promise of good behaviour, and who had now been arrested and sent to York Castle to undergo the sentence passed upon him 13 years ago? And, whether, during the 13 years which have elapsed since the sentence was passed, Beresford's conduct has given any cause for complaint; and, if not, whether he will take steps to secure his immediate liberation?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. MATTHEWS,) Birmingham, E.

I have communicated with the Justices, and, with their concurrence, have ordered this man's immediate discharge.
