HC Deb 01 March 1889 vol 333 c706
MR. MACARTNEY (Antrim, S.)

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether, having regard to the additional and very onerous duties imposed upon Poor Law Officers in Ireland under the Franchise Acts of 1885, and to the great reluctance manifested by Boards of Guardians to vote adequate remuneration in such cases, the Government proposes to make a Grant on this account for the present year, as was done in 1885?

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

I quite sympathize with the Poor Law Officers in the matter mentioned; but, as I have explained in reply to former Questions, it is one which concerns not Ireland alone, but the whole of the United Kingdom, and could only be dealt with by a general measure of legislation.
