HC Deb 04 July 1889 vol 337 cc1446-7
MR. HAYDEN (Leitrim, S.)

I beg to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland whether the Irish Local Government Board has yet sanctioned or refused to sanction the appointment of medical officer of the Athlone Union Workhouse, the election for which took place more than a month since; whether an objection to the candidate selected was sent to the Local Government Board; whether this objection related to a matter, the truth of which it was in the power of the Local Government Board at once to ascertain; and whether the Local Government Board will allow any further time to elapse without giving a decision on the question?

MR. A. J. BALFOUR

Objection has been raised to the candidate elected, and the Local Government Board are making inquiries into the matter. As the appointment will not take effect until the 1st of August next, no inconvenience will be sustained by the election not having effect given to it at once.
