HC Deb 01 July 1889 vol 337 c1165
COLONEL NOLAN (Galway, N.)

I beg to ask the Secretary of State for War if he can give any further information as to the statement that all single sergeants going through courses at Woolwich received 4d. a day lodging money; and, if he is certain that sergeants sent home from India to qualify as master gunners receive more than 2d.?

* MR. E. STANHOPE

I should like to explain, in reference to a former answer given by me on this subject, that the War Office regulations give 4d. a day to each unmarried man stationed singly away from the headquarters of his regiment. Should, however, several unmarried men be away from headquarters they are allowed 2d. a day, as separate rooms need not be provided. The non-commissioned officers sent home from India are paid by the India Office, and it is believed that they receive 2d. a day only.
