M'CARTAN (Down, S.)I beg to ask the Secretary to the Treasury whether his attention has been called to the Report of the Inspectors of Irish Fisheries for 1888, page 36, where it is stated that "the fishing at Newcastle (County Down) makes no improvement, owing to the want of harbour accommodation" there; and, whether, considering the representations which have been made to him, the circumstances in connection with the destruction of the harbour works, and the danger to which the poor fishermen of Newcastle are frequently exposed for want of harbour accommodation, he can now say if anything will be done in the matter?
§ THE SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. JACKSON, Leeds, N.)The statement quoted by the hon. Member proceeds not, as his question might seem to imply, from the Inspectors of Irish Fisheries, but from the Divisional Officer of Coastguard. To be effective, any scheme for the improvement of the Harbour at Newcastle would cost more than the Government would be justified in spending at that place, and an answer in that sense has been sent to the Memorialists.
