HC Deb 30 April 1889 vol 335 cc773-4
MR. KING (Hull)

I beg to ask the Under Secretary of State for India whether the Secretary of State has yet caused the inquiry to be made, which was promised in answer to a question in this House on 18th February, 1887, with regard to the grant of Presidency allowances such as are given to the India Public Works Department to officers of the Telegraph Department, as sanctioned by letter 1,000, E. G., July 15, 1876; and, if so, whether he can now state why the sanctioned allowances are not granted?

*THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE FOR INDIA (Sir J. GORST,) Chatham

The inquiry was made, as promised, in February, 1887; and a reply was received that the question of granting the same Presidency allowances to the officers of the Telegraph Department as are given to the Public Works Department had been referred to the Finance Committee in India. No further communication has been made by the Government of India to the Secretary of State.
