HC Deb 15 April 1889 vol 335 cc490-1
MR. BLUNDELL MAPLE

I beg to ask the President of the Board of Trade if he will have compiled a Return of the various Foreign Countries giving bounties; the various items upon which bounties are paid in each country; and the amounts?

*SIR J. FERGUSSON

A Return of Foreign Bounties on Navigation and Shipping is in preparation, and will shortly be presented to Parliament. There are not known to be any other considerable bounties except upon the export of sugar; but there are some to French fishermen off Newfoundland.

MR. CAINE

Does it include bounties on shipping?

*SIR J. FERGUSSON

Yes.

Mr. BLUNDELL MAPLE

In the Argentine Republic is there a bounty on meat?

*SIR J. FERGUSSON

I am not sure of the fact, but we are making inquiries.

SIR L. PLAYFAIR

When will the Return be laid on the Table?

*SIR J. FERGUSSON

I hope it will be laid on the Table immediately.

MR. J. LOWTHER

Will the Return show the bounties on all articles?

*SIR J. FERGUSSON

No, Sir.

MR. J. LOWTHER

Then I shall move to extend it.
