HC Deb 19 November 1888 vol 330 c1511
MR. WATT (Glasgow, Camlachie)

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether the Law Officers of the Crown have reported that, notwithstanding the suspension of diplomatic relations between Great Britian and the United States of Venezuela, the latter Republic was a friendly Power for all purposes under the Foreign Enlistment Act; and, whether he has any objection to lay the case submitted, and the opinion given, upon the Table of the House?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir JAMES FERGUSSON) (Manchester, N.B.)

Her Majesty's Government are advised that Venezuela is a "friendly Power" within the meaning of the Foreign Enlistment Act. It is not usual to quote the opinions of the Law Officers.
