HC Deb 08 March 1888 vol 323 c582
MR. R. T. REID (Dumfries, &c.)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether he will exercise his power to prevent any sentence now pending from being carried into effect under which several successive floggings are to be inflicted on a prisoner within six months?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

No, Sir; it is not my intention to prevent pending sentences of flogging from being carried into effect, unless in any particular case good reasons can be shown which would justify my interference.
