HC Deb 26 June 1888 vol 327 cc1279-80
MR. P. STANHOPE (Wednesbury)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether Clerks of the Peace or County Treasurers, being public servants, are entitled to act as party agents in the Revision Courts or as candidates' agents at Parliamentary elections?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

I am not aware of any statutory provision or rule of law which would prevent a Clerk of the Peace or a County Treasurer from acting as an election agent. The Clerk of the Peace, however, being charged with certain important functions in connection with the registration of voters, could not properly, in my opinion, act in any way as an agent in the Revision Courts.
