HC Deb 25 June 1888 vol 327 c1121
MR. QUILTER (Suffolk, S.)

asked the Under Secretary of State for the Home Department, What is the reason for the delay in the issue of the Return relating to the Prison Department; and, whether the Return will show the number of prisoners employed in mat making in each prison?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. STUART-WORTLEY) (Sheffield, Hallam)

There has been no avoidable delay this year in the preparation of the Report of the Prison Commissioners; the Report usually appears at the end of August. When issued it will show, in the same way as the Report last published, the number of prisoners employed at mat-making in each prison. It appears that the actual daily average number of prisoners so employed in the year ending March 31, 1888, was only 1,473.
