HC Deb 24 July 1888 vol 329 cc332-3
MR. ANDERSON (Elgin and Nairn)

I wish to ask the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland the following Question, of which I have given him private Notice. By what person, or persons, was the Governor of Tullamore Gaol directed to deprive the late Mr. Mandeville of his clothing in the middle of a night in November last; and whether this step was taken with the knowledge of the Government?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR) (Manchester, E.)

, in reply, said, he believed this question of Prison Rules and prison discipline was one that was being brought before the Coroner at the inquest which was now sitting; and until that inquiry was concluded it would be better that he should make no statement with reference to the matter.
