HC Deb 19 July 1888 vol 328 c1759
MR. HARRIS (Galway, E.)

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether he is aware that Head Constable John Ryan, Royal Irish Constabulary, Maylough, County Galway, acting, as he has stated, on instructions which he had received from County Inspector O'Brien, has given notice to Mr. Thomas Higgins that for the future the Maylough Amateur Band must not perform on any public occasion whatever; and, if so, would the Government state why the peaceful villagers of Maylough are to be deprived of an enjoyment which is allowed to all other people?

THE CHIEF SECRETARY (Mr. A. J. BALFOUR) (Manchester, E.)

, in reply, said, that the Head Constable had not been told to stop the playing of the band by the County Inspector. On one occasion only had the band been interfered with by the police; and then it was on account of a breach of the peace being anticipated, owing to a squabble between some members of the National League.
