HC Deb 06 July 1888 vol 328 cc557-8
MR. MACDONALD CAMERON (Wick, &c.)

asked the Secretary to the Treasury, Whether it is true that the vacancy in the Statistical Department of the Customs, caused by the recent death of a principal clerk, is not to be filled up, pending the re-organization of the Office; and, whether such re-organization is likely to be effected shortly, or is indefinitely postponed to be dealt with by the Royal Commission; and, if so whether promotions to Staff appointments, and to the Upper Division, is for the present entirely suspended throughout the Civil Service?

SIR HERBERT MAXWELL (a LORD of the TREASURY) (Wigton)

(who replied) said, that the re-organization of the Customs cannot be said to be indefinitely postponed, but we wish to receive the Report of the Royal Commission before proceeding with it.
