HC Deb 17 December 1888 vol 332 c451
MR. JOICEY (Durham, Chester-le-Street)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether any inquiry has taken place as to the sanity of Waddle, who was recently convicted of murder at Durham Assizes; and, if so, with what result; and, whether, considering that the evidence upon which he was convicted was wholly circumstantial, he will recommend Her Majesty to commute the sentence to penal servitude?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

I have made inqniry, and the result is that I have no reason to doubt the sanity of the prisoner. I regret that I am unable to advise any interference with the due course of law.
