HC Deb 03 December 1888 vol 331 cc828-9
MR. FLYNN(for Mr. GILHOOLY) (Cork, W.)

asked the Secretary to the Treasury, Whether a Memorial has been forwarded to him from the inhabitants of Schull, County Cork, setting forth the necessity of extending and improving the fishery pier in that town; whether public meetings for the same object have been held; whether he is aware that about 1,000,000 of mackerel have been landed at Schull during the seven months ending October 30; whether steamboats carrying cargoes of fish from Schull to America have been delayed for hours owing to the want of suitable pier accommodation; and, whether, considering the importance of Schull as a fishing station, he will take steps to give effect to the Memorial referred to?

THE SECRETARY (Mr. JACKSON) (Leeds, N.)

The Memorial referred to in the Question was received by the Board of Works on the 26th ultimo, praying for the execution of works to extend and improve the pier at Schull, County Cork, and also copies of Resolutions passed at a meeting held on September 20 last on the necessity for extending the pier and removing rocks in its vicinity. I have, however, no information as to the alleged large capture of mackerel, or the delay to ships in conveying it away owing to the want of quay accommodation. This pier was transferred to the Grand Jury, County Cork, on June 29, 1854, for future maintenance; and the Board have no fund at their disposal at present for such works, nor has the improvement of Schull Pier been recommended by the Royal Commission on Public Works.
