HC Deb 26 April 1888 vol 325 cc591-2
BARON DIMSDALE (Herts, Hitchin)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether his attention has been called to the provisions of "The County of Hertford and Liberty of St. Alban's Act, 1874," 37 & 38 Vict. c. 45, which requires the Justices to cause an original Court of Quarter Sessions to be held within the Hertford Division of the county, and also an adjourned Court to be held within the Liberty of St. Alban's Division; and, whether, seeing that these enactments would serve to make it imperative to hold an original Session on a Monday, although it may be Easter Monday or Bank Holiday, he will, with a view to the public convenience, introduce such amendment into the Quarter Sessions Bill now before Parliament as may enable the Justices to fix the holding of Quarter Sessions on some other day when they happen to fall on either Easter Monday or Bank Holiday?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

I have consulted the Lord Chancellor as to the Question of my hon. Friend; and I am informed by him that the Local Government (England and Wales) Bill, as it now stands, would enable Justices to fix Quarter Sessions, when they fall on either Easter Monday or Bank Holiday, on any day that they think most convenient.
