HC Deb 23 May 1887 vol 315 cc899-900
MR. T. W. RUSSELL (Tyrone, S.)

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer a Question of which he had given him private Notice—namely, Whether any decision had been arrived at as to the local expenditure of the £50,000 in Ireland; and whether the Government would provide for the carrying out of the recommendations of the Royal Commission on Public Works in Ireland?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER (Mr. GOSCHEN) (St. George's, Hanover Square)

, in reply, said, no final decision had been arrived at as to the disposal of the £50,000. The Government intended to act upon the Report of the Royal Commission by beginning the necessary surveys which had to be taken in hand with a view of carrying out the recommendations of the Commission; but they did not pledge themselves to the adoption of the whole of these recommendations. They intended, however, to proceed at once with the survey of important works of arterial drainage.
