HC Deb 25 March 1887 vol 312 cc1472-3
MR. CAVENDISH BENTINCK (Whitehaven)

asked the Postmaster General, Whether, in the event of its being decided to discontinue the Sunday delivery of letters throughout the Country, a proportionate reduction in the wages of the postmen will not necessarily follow?

THE POSTMASTER GENERAL (Mr. RAIKES) (Cambridge University)

In fixing the wages of postmen, it is the practice to take into account whether or not they have any work on. Sunday. If the Sunday delivery of letters were discontinued throughout the country, and postmen wore relieved of all work on Sunday, it would certainly be necessary to consider whether the wages of the men who now work on Sunday, and who, of course, form the great majority of the postmen, should not undergo a proportionate reduction.
