HC Deb 14 March 1887 vol 312 c172
MR. CALDWELL (Glasgow, St. Rollox)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, Whether his attention has been called to the acceptance by Mr. Stipendiary Gemmel, Glasgow, of the appointment of Assessor to the Dean of Guild Court, Glasgow; and, whether this latter appointment interferes with the due fulfilment of his duties as stipendiary magistrate; and, if so, whether the Government intend taking any steps in the matter?

TUB SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

I am informed that the appointment of Assessor does not interfere with the proper fulfilment of Mr. Gemmel's duties as stipendiary magistrate. Mr. Gemmel informed the Lord Provost and magistrates before taking the appointment; and intimated that if at any time they should be of opinion that it did interfere with his other duties he was prepared to resign it.
