THE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE HOME DEPARTMENT (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

said, that the Government wore fully alive to the importance of the question, and would carefully consider the suggestion made by the hon. and gallant Gentleman as to the destruction of the straw and compensation to the farmers. The whole question of dealing with the Hessian fly by the most effectual means would be closely considered.
