HC Deb 04 February 1887 vol 310 cc654-5
MR. PICKARD (York, W. E., Normanton)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, If it is within his power to order Her Majesty's Inspectors of Coal and Ironstone Mines to insert in their Annual Report the number of days on which each mine draws coal or ironstone; and, if so, will he give instructions that this information shall be given in their Report for 1886?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

The In- specters have no power to compel owners to give them information as to the number of days on which each mine draw coal or ironstone, so it would be futile for me to give them instructions which they would be unable to carry out. I will, however, bear in mind the hon. Member's suggestion, and consult the Inspectors on the subject.
