HC Deb 30 August 1887 vol 320 cc454-5
DR. TANNER (Cork Co., Mid)

asked the Postmaster General, If it is a fact that the Cork and Macroom Railway does not carry the mails from any of the stations between Macroom and Cork into Cork; if it is true that the mails from Crookstown are sent into Cork by post car, and thereby get late for the night mail from Cork to Dublin; whether an arrangement will be made with the Macroom Railway Company to carry all mails from all stations by an evening train, to arrive in Cork in time for special bags to catch the Dublin night mail; also for a day service in connection with the Dublin 12 o'clock mail; and, whether this service could be so arranged that traders and others in the district referred to might be enabled to save one, if not two, mails?

THE POSTMASTER GENERAL (Mr. RAIKES) () Cambridge University

The Cork and Macroom Railway is used for the conveyance of the day mail to and from Macroom and other places; but the night mail is still conveyed by car. I am not aware that there have been failures of the bags from Crookstown; but I will have inquiry made on this point. I will also inquire whether use can be made of the railway for the night mail, and whether any improvement of the day mail is practicable.
