HC Deb 22 August 1887 vol 319 c1374
MR. LABOUCHERE (Northampton)

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department, with reference to the postponement for a week of the execution of the man Early at Winchester for the murder of his sweetheart at Southampton, Whether this postponement was in consequence of a member of the Royal Family having announced her intention of coming to Winchester in order to unveil a statue of Her Majesty?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. MATTHEWS) (Birmingham, E.)

The sentence of death on the convict Early has been commuted to penal servitude for life.
