HC Deb 04 April 1887 vol 313 c358
MR. HANBURY (Preston)

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Whether he has received any official information of the existence of extensive gold deposits on or about the boundary line between Canada and the United States; and, what steps have been or are about to be taken to determine the exact boundary between British and United States territory in that direction?

THE SECRETARY OF STATE (Sir HENRY HOLLAND) (Hampstead)

The Government have received no official information of the gold deposits referred to. The United States Government last year made a proposal for a survey of the boundary between Alaska and Canadian territory, and some correspondence has ensued upon it; but no definite result has yet been attained, and the United States Congress have recently refused the appropriation proposed for a preliminary survey.
