HC Deb 16 September 1886 vol 309 c593
MR. HAYDEN (Leitrim, S.)

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether he is aware that, in the outdoor branch of the Inland Revenue Department, widespread discontent prevails owing to the officials' insufficient salaries and bad prospects of promotion; and, whether he will take steps to remedy this state of affairs, so detrimental to the interests of the taxpayers of the United Kingdom?

THE SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY (Mr. JACKSON) (Leeds, N.)

(who replied) said: In reply to this Question I can only say that I am not aware that— Widespread discontent prevails in the Inland Revenue Department owing to the officials' insufficient salaries and bad prospects of promotion, nor do I think that that is a fair description of the position of affairs. I have nothing to add to the reply which I gave on the 13th instant to a Question put by the hon. Member for Preston (Mr. Tomlinson).
