HC Deb 08 March 1886 vol 303 cc115-6
SIR EDWARD BIRKBECK (Norfolk, E.)

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether the German Government has consented to take part in the proposed [...] at the Hague on the subject of the liquor traffic in the North Sea; and, if so, whether Her Majesty's Government will take such steps as may be practicable, with the view to the early meeting of that Conference?

THE UNDER SECRETARY OF STATE (Mr. BRYCE) (Aberdeen, S.)

I am glad to inform my hon. Friend and the House that the German Government have consented to take part in this Conference. Her Majesty's Government is now in communication with the Netherlands Government on the subject, and I have no doubt that the latter will convoke the meeting at the earliest date possible. My hon. Friend may rest assured that, as Her Majesty's Government fully appreciate the importance of the matter to which he has devoted so much care and attention, there will be no delay on their part in bringing it to a successful termination.
