asked the Secretary of State for War, What number of vacancies there are for Officers in the Militia and Yeomanry, distinguishing between Field Officers, Captains, and Subalterns?

The vacancies among commissioned officers of the Militia are—for field officers, five; for captains, 113; for subalterns, 445; total, 563. In the Yeomanry the vacant commissions are—field officers, six; captains, 16; subalterns, 73—in all 95; but in some regiments there are supernumeraries—35 in all—so that the real deficiency is only two field officers, four captains, and 54 subalterns—total, 60 officers.
