HC Deb 15 May 1885 vol 298 c623
MR. ARTHUR O'CONNOR

asked the Under Secretary of State for India, Whether his attention has been called to a paragraph in The Indian Statesman of the 21st of April, to the effect that the impressment of the people as camp followers with the troops on the frontier is creating considerable excitement in the districts where it is being attempted, the villagers leaving their homes to avoid the conscription; and, if he can say what is the official report as to the proceedings referred to?

MR. J. K. CROSS

I have seen the paragraph referred to. No official Report has reached the India Office that any such measures have been needed or taken; and I understand that no conscription is enforced in India.
