HC Deb 19 March 1885 vol 295 c1694
COLONEL MILNE-HOME

asked the Secretary of State for War, What opportunities, if any, exist at the Staff College for officers to be instructed in modern Oriental languages, and if it is proposed to modify existing arrangements so as to increase facilities in that direction?

THE MAEQUESS OF HARTINGTON

No opportunities exist at the Staff College for officers to be instructed in modern Oriental languages. The time of officers while at the Staff College should be devoted exclusively to military studies. It is not, therefore, proposed to modify existing arrangements in this respect. The general question whether some encouragement should be given to officers to study Oriental and other modern languages is under consideration.
