HC Deb 30 October 1884 vol 293 cc519-20
MR. ARTHUR O'CONNOR

asked Mr. Solicitor General for Ireland, Whether he would have any objection to lay upon the Table a list of the names of gentlemen submitted to the Lord Lieutenant, in accordance with the suggestion of the late Chief Secretary, as fit and proper persons to act in the Commission of the Peace, and showing which (if any) of them have been in consequence appointed?

THE SOLICITOR GENERAL FOR IRELAND (Mr. WALKER)

It would be inexpedient to lay upon the Table a list of the names of the gentlemen submitted to the Lord Chancellor for appointment to the Commission of the Peace in accordance with the suggestion mentioned in the Question. It would lead to a discussion upon individual cases, unjust and misleading in the case of gentlemen not appointed. I may state, however, that a very considerable addition has been made to the Magistracy from names submitted in consequence of the suggestion of the late Chief Secretary.
