HC Deb 27 March 1884 vol 286 cc882-3
MR. ARTHUR O'CONNOR

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. Whether he is aware that the Corporation of Kilkenny have obtained an eviction decree against their tenant John Bergin, who holds a farm under them in the neighbourhood of Borris-in-Ossory, and have refused to allow him to sell his interest in his holding, although the amount realizable for it would far exceed the year and a half's rent due from him; and, whether, if this is in accordance with the existing Law, the Government propose to remove the restrictions imposed on the sale of a tenant's interest?

MR. TREVELYAN

Sir, I am informed that the Kilkenny Corporation obtained a decree against John Bergin, and that he has been evicted. They did not refuse him permission to sell his interest; but the difficulty was that there was such an amount due by him that his interest was practically valueless.
