HC Deb 07 April 1884 vol 286 cc1804-5
MR. HARRINGTON

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, If he would state how many of the prisoners at present in Galway awaiting trial have been confined for a period of twelve months; and, whether, seeing that the policeman Muldooney, Patrick Finigan, and others, charged with murder or conspiracy to murder, and awaiting trial during the past fifteen months, have had their trial further postponed at the late assizes, he will hold out any hope that the Crown will not oppose a motion for bail made in behalf of any or all the prisoners?

MR. TREVELYAN

Sir, I am informed that there is no prisoner in custody in Galway Gaol for a period of 12 months awaiting trial; but the Question is, I suppose, intended to refer to the prisoners from Gal way now at Sligo, of whom there are, I believe, six. As regards the application for the postponement of the trial mentioned, it was not at the instance of the Crown, but at the instance of the prisoner Muldooney, on the ground of the absence of a material witness. That being so, and the charge being one of murder, I am advised that the Crown could not consent to the prisoners being admitted to bail.
