HC Deb 03 April 1884 vol 286 cc1483-4
MR. BIRKBECK

asked the Secretary to the Admiralty, Whether, in conse- quence of the ratification of the North Sea Fisheries Convention, which comes into force on 15th May next, British fishing vessels engaged in the herring and mackerel fisheries on grounds frequented by Belgian and French trawling vessels on the East Coast of England, will, for the future, be more adequately protected by cruisers than has hitherto been the case; and, whether a sufficient number of cruisers will be employed to enforce Articles 26 to 33 inclusive of the said Convention?

MR. CAMPBELL - BANNERMAN

Sir, Instructions for carrying out the provisions of the North Sea Fisheries Convention have been drawn up by the Admiral Superintendent of Naval Reserves in communication with the Board of Trade, and the necessary cruisers have been ordered to be ready.
