HC Deb 09 August 1883 vol 282 cc2105-6
LORD JOHN MANNERS

asked the First Lord of the Treasury, If he has received a Memorial praying for the appointment of a Committee of Experts to consider the advisability of removing the Wellington Monument in St. Paul's from the Wellington Chapel to the Nave; and, if, should the Government decide to appoint such a Committee, the alternative of leaving the monument where it is, and removing the screen from before it, will be included in the terms of reference?

MR. GLADSTONE

, in reply, said, he was glad to see the noble Lord back again in his place, and putting a Question upon a public matter in which he took an interest. The Memorial to which the noble Lord referred had reached the Government very recently, and it had not yet been in their power to give it full consideration. They would do so, of course, as soon as they were able; but he had no hesitation in saying that, whether such a Committee be appointed or not, care would be taken to consider and examine thoroughly the suggestion raised by the noble Lord as to the removal of the screen from the monument.
