HC Deb 27 July 1882 vol 272 cc1966-7
MR. BLAKE

asked the Chief Secretary to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Whether the Government contemplates, in the instance of suitable persons availing of the offer of the Canadian Government to provide settlers with 160 acres of land each, on condition of the Imperial Government conveying the immigrants from Ireland, and making an advance for the erection of dwellings and preparing for crops with seed a portion of the land, all cost incurred to be secured on the settlers' land, and repaid by annual instalments, so as to save the Exchequer and Irish Poor Law Unions from loss?

MR. TREVELYAN

, in reply, said, that His Excellency was now in communication with the Colonial Office in regard to the question of emigration to Canada and other Colonies; but it would not be possible to reply fully to the inquiry of the hon. Member, inasmuch as the Arrears of Rent (Ireland) Bill, he was sorry to say, had not yet become an Act.

MR. T. P. O'CONNOR

If it should become an Act, will the right hon. Gentleman then consider the advisability of availing himself of the offer?

MR. TREVELYAN

Most certainly.
