asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Whether the object of Her Majesty's Government in signing the joint Note to the agents of England and Prance in Egypt, which stated that the two Governments— Are closely associated in the resolution to avert by their common efforts all the internal or external causes of complication which might menace the regime established in Egypt,' and that the dangers which the Government of the Khedive might have to fear would "certainly find France and England united to face them," was only, as stated in the Despatch from M. Challemel-Lacour of the 17th January last (No. 44 of the French Yellow Book), to give M. Gambetta "a proof of the desire of Her Majesty's Government to show itself in accord with France?"
