HC Deb 16 March 1881 vol 259 c1148
SIR HENRY TYLER

asked the Prime Minister, Whether, in consequence of the answer he gave yesterday, the Indian Government would now be at liberty to abandon Candahar without further communication with the Home Government?

MR. GLADSTONE

Sir, the Indian Government received certain instructions from the Home Government, and I have not the least doubt that the Indian Government will, and almost must, make further communications to the Government at home before Candahar can be quitted. I mentioned on a former occasion that we did not anticipate any movement which would vitally involve that arrangement at an early date; and so anxious were we too keep the House well informed, that when, immediately after my making that announcement, we found that a limited body of troops was going to be withdrawn, my right hon. Friend near me instantly apprised the House of the circumstance. The Indian Government, no doubt, will make a further communication to the Government at home before the evacuation can be completed.
