HC Deb 06 February 1880 vol 250 cc149-50
MR. MARK STEWART

asked the Under Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, If the trade clauses of the Cheefoo Convention have yet been ratified; if any communication has been received from Sir Thomas Wade as to the negotiations on the subject of Pekin; and, if he will lay the Papers upon the Table of the House?

MR. BOURKE

Sir, negotiations are going on between Her Majesty's Government and the Chinese Government upon this subject. We have received several communications lately from Sir Thomas Wade. The negotiations are not yet completed, and, of course, until they are completed, it would be premature to state their purport to the House.
