HC Deb 06 February 1880 vol 250 cc148-9
MR. ANDERSON

asked the President of the Local Government Board, why, in filling the office of Chief Registrar, the forty-two years' services of Dr. Farr were ignored, and the public deprived of his aid in the new census?

MR. SCLATER-BOOTH

Sir, I understand from the Prime Minister, whose duty it was to advise the Crown in regard to this office—the office, that is, of Registrar General, not "Chief Re- gistrar," as stated in the Question—that he was satisfied that the state of Dr. Farr's health was alone sufficient to render it inexpedient to appoint him to any arduous and laborious post.

MR. ANDERSON

As I do not consider that answer of the right hon. Gentleman quite satisfactory, I beg to give Notice that I will take an early opportunity of bringing the subject under the notice of the House.
