HC Deb 30 June 1879 vol 247 cc947-8
DR. CAMERON

(for Mr. J. HOLMS) asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether, having regard to the early termination of the Cape and Zanzibar Mail Contract, and in view of the intended establishment of a submarine telegraph along the East Coast of Africa, under a large subsidy from the Government, he will inform the House if Her Majesty's Government intend to continue the present postal subsidy for the conveyance of Mails between the Cape and Zanzibar after the termination of the present contract in February 1881?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

The contract does not expire till February, 1881. It is at present too early to say what arrangements might be contemplated on its expiry.
