HC Deb 21 April 1879 vol 245 cc698-9
MR. DODSON

asked Mr. Chancellor of the Exchequer, Whether he can now state to the House the amount of Revenue derived from the Dog Licences as altered in the financial year 1878–9, and the amount derived from those Licences in the year 1877–8?

THE CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER

Yes, Sir. The amount received in the year 1877–8 was £372,700, and in the year 1878–9, £422,000. That is just £50,000 in advance of the year before. It is, however, £36,000 less than the estimate that was made for 1878–9, the exemption of shepherds' dogs having greatly exceeded our expectations. There appears also to have been a diminution in the number of dogs kept.
